Zohran Mamdani is a Ugandan-American politician and the current Mayor of New York City, set to assume office on January 1, 2026. Born in Uganda, he moved to New York City at age seven. Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. He previously served as a member of the New York State Assembly for the 36th district from 2021 to 2025, representing Astoria and Long Island City. Before entering politics, Mamdani worked as a foreclosure prevention housing counselor in Queens. He’s also a rapper, known as Mr. Cardamom.
