
Bashar al-Assad is a Syrian former politician and dictator who served as the president of Syria from 2000 until his overthrow in 2024. He is the son of Hafez al-Assad, the former president of Syria who ruled the country for nearly three decades. Assad became President of Syria in July 2000, following his father’s death, and has since been a central figure in Middle Eastern politics. His presidency has been marked by authoritarian rule, human rights abuses, and a devastating civil war that started in 2011. Despite international condemnation, Assad has maintained power through strategic alliances and military support.
