
Leopold II of Belgium was the King of the Belgians (1865-1909). He focused on colonial expansion, particularly in the Congo Free State, which he controlled as his private property. His rule in the Congo was marked by brutal suppression and exploitation, with estimates suggesting millions of Congolese died under his regime.
Born Léopold Louis-Philippe Marie Victor on April 9, 1835, in Brussels, Belgium, and died on December 17, 1909, at the age of 74 in Laeken, Belgium.
